Any language consist of four basic skills: reading and listening (receptive skills) and speaking and writing (productive skills). This unit deals with the receptive skills. All of these skills are equally important. We cannot say that the productive skills are more important or vice versa. The reasons behind listening and reading can be based on two motives: for a purpose/aim or simply for entertainment. If you are reading or listening to you favorite commentary or commentator than you are indulging in receptive skills for entertainment purposes. However if you are listening or reading an instruction leaflet than you doing it for a purpose. Readers and listeners use a number of skills including predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from test.
