The past tenses are used to talk about the past actions or events. There are four past tense forms in English: past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Simple past tense is used for completed actions at a definite time; past continuous tense is used for actions in progress, at a certain time in the past; past perfect tense refers to actions that happened before other actions in the past; past perfect continuous is used to express that an event in the past has been started in the past, and continued up until another time in the past. The duration of an action does not continue until now, it stops before something else in the past.
