Teaching or introducing a new language comprises of vocabulary, grammatical forms, and language functions.
Each component of the language plays an integral part in learning a new language. While there is no specific or set-rule as to which approach one must use to teach them, the ESA approach demonstrates how we can deliver an effective lesson for each component. For example, the straight arrow approach is commonly used for vocabulary or grammar, and functions are more commonly used with the boomerang or patchwork methods. I think the role of the teacher plays a large part in deciding what to teach based on the context/usage, appropriacy, and the level of the students.
