This unit covered pronunciation and phonology. We defined phonemes as the sounds in any given language and focused on the particular types of sounds that are made in English (plosives, fricatives, nasal, etc) and methods for teaching these with detailed instruction on intonation, stress of syllables, the use of the phonetic alphabet and articulation. I learned that good pronunciation is of particular concern to English language learners and that use of the phonetic alphabet is a good way to teach the sounds since the written language is unreliable for demonstrating how a word actually sounds (i.e. bear, bare, fair, and there all have the same sound but use various spellings). Teaching of pronunciation can occur as a lesson focus or as something that is addressed as the students learn grammar and vocabulary. Having 100% native accent is not likely or even the goal of some students, however intelligible speaking should be the concern here.
