This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
As with the present tenses, many of the rules used for making statements about the past are now done automatically. Understanding the underlying rules for my speech is useful as such an analysis helps me to stop and reflect on what do everyday and take for granted. There are many irregular verb forms in English and these will simply have to be learned over time by the student. But the basic construction of past simple, simple continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous is useful to know as well as the reason for using or not using such a form. I think I'll have to start attaching labels to my sentences in everyday speech for some time to come as a drill to more fully understand what is being said and why a form is being used. In this way my own speech can be used as an odd sort of study aid to better understanding the underpinnings of my own language!
