Unit 5 introduces us to the different techniques of class management aimed at creating the right atmosphere in a classroom conductive to learning. It shows how to use eye contact, gestures and voice to establish a good rapport with the students. This unit then outlines different ways of grouping students and classroom arrangements for the benefit of activities, cohesion and discipline. We also learn how to find the right balance between TTT and STT as well as how to make instructions effective. The next section focuses on establishing rapport between teachers and students and between students themselves. We're shown practical ways to create an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere in the classroom which would stimulate enthusiasm for learning. Finally, we're introduced to possible reasons for disciplinary problems, how to prevent them and how to respond to them. Unit 5 made me aware of how important a role the teacher plays in class management. I learned that the teacher must be able to inspire confidence in the students and at the same time has to be flexible in order to adjust his/her role to the situation at hand. I realized how important it is to strike the right balance between exercising controle and encouraging a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. I conclude that a positive and balanced attitude of the teacher as well as a personal interest for the students are vital components for successful teaching.
