Lexical approach, Michael Lewis - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TESOL Glossary

Lewis believed in a different approach to that of teaching English as a set of grammar structures into which vocabulary could be placed. He shifted the emphasis through 180 degrees, suggesting that the basis of language should be ‘lexis’, i.e. groups of words which are naturally put together (collocations). By learning about the lexical chunks of language these could be used for real communicative tasks rather than striving for grammatical mastery.  [Read more]

Again with this unit, I could see just how difficult learning English could be for some non-native speakers and the special care that teachers of English as a foreign language must take to avoid muddying the waters. Phrasal verbs struck me as a particularly daunting minefield, with three types all needing slightly different treatment and the fact that some of the phrases themselves, like catch up, get over it,...  [Read more]

The review of the present tense was worthwhile, if only to show me how easily I was confused by it. The present simple is simple enough, but the present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous must be the topic of a Dr. Seuss story. It helped some when I saw continuous and progressive as the same. I noticed that the activate exercises are repetitive and made me wonder if there are any fun ways to learn verbs. This unit concentrates on...  [Read more]
