This video is part of our video series on "Evaluation and Testing of Students". In this video, we look at some of the most common general English exams students of English take around the world. EFL teachers often hold classes to prepare the students for these international proficiency exams.
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
The two videos included in this lesson clearly show the effect of the instructor's attitude and methods upon the students' participation and the success of the lesson as a whole. In the first video, the teacher was scowling the whole time and showed little or no interest in his students. This made students feel unwelcome and less eager to participate. Furthermore, he started off by repeatedly saying that the topic that would be covered was easy, which intimidated students and prevented them from contributing answers in case they were wrong and they might be seen as stupid. The teacher also used technical terms to refer to a concept without bothering to explain the concept, and didn't change his method when his students did not understand. As opposed to the first lesson, the second lesson was much more successful because the teacher engaged with his students by learning their names, interacting with each of them, smiling, laughing, and making jokes. This made the students feel like they were in a safe learning environment and encouraged them to freely participate without worrying so much about making mistakes. He also was more prepared for the lesson in general, having brought completed examples of the activities ahead of time, and paid attention to the students while they were doing the worksheets instead of ignoring them, as he did in the first lesson. Finally, he praised the students for their contributions, even if they were incorrect, whereas in the first lesson he barked at the students rudely and never acknowledged their contributions.
