TESOL Videos - Productive and Receptive Skills in the ESL Classroom - Writing Skills - Engage Phase
So let's have a look now what might take place in a typical writing lesson and, again, we're going to use the format of a straight arrow ESA lesson. Our first stage is to the go to the engage stage and, if we think back to what we said before, what we need to do is try to generate interest. So, an example here could be we show a picture first of all taken from a newspaper or magazine and then we can ask the students some questions. From looking at the picture we can ask them if they can tell us what is actually happening now as shown by the picture. Then, we can generate a bit more interest by asking them to give us ideas about what they thought was happening before this picture took place and what happened after. So, here we're just trying to build up the idea of a sequence of events taking place. They can see the picture and that's the middle event but they've also got a picture in their mind now of what happened before or could have happened before, what happened in the picture and then what happened afterwards. So ,what we can then do is to move on to our study phase.
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
In unit eleven,I learned of receptive skills which deals with reading and listening of a language. The seriousness of this depends on what the learners are reading or listening to.It is said that receptive skills in it`s self is not complete without being accompanied by productive skills which deals with speaking and writing. Receptive skills(Reading and Listening),depends on the purpose or seriousness on why it is being done. For example, reading or listening for a purpose like,to achieve some particular aims or goals is different from reading or listening for entertainment purposes. In the first one,we pay more attention than in the second. In this unit, i also learned that, reading and listening is not only done with the eyes and ears but also with our minds because we need a pre-existing kownledge of the world or our environment to help us understand better. For the above to be effective, skills like, predictive skills, scanning skills, skimming skills, detailed information and deduction from context, has to be well mastered. The teaching of receptive skill(reading and listening),just like the teaching of many other topics,is not possible without some potential problems. Thanks to some solutions to these problems that has been make simple to teachers and learner as seen in unit eleven. For example,pre-teaching of vocabulary prior to commencing a reading or listening activity, careful selection of text, like the non-authentic text that is suited to the students` abilities to understand easily, choosing an interestion topic which can attract or capture the students` interest or attention, among others. All of the above will make teaching receptive skills(reading and listening)easier to most learners.
