This unit covers modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice and relative clauses, as well as phrasal verbs. Modals are used before other verbs to add meaning to the verb, particularly in terms of obligation, possibility, permission, ability, and advice. There are two voices used in English- the active and the passive. They have the same meaning, but in the active, the focus is on the subject/doer, while in the passive, the focus is on the object and the doer is less important. Relative clauses are used in the passive voice, and the two types are defining, where the information given is essential to the meaning of the sentence, and non-defining, where the information given is not essential and can be taken out without changing the essence of the meaning. Lastly, phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs such as \"turn up.\" The three types are Intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable, and are categorized based on grammatical structure.
