I have learned about how helpful planning a lesson can be. It gives a good overview of the lesson and keeps the teacher from losing sight of the main goals. Self assessment is crucial so as to keep improving. Hopefully I will find myself in a situation where I could get the students' feedback on my lesson planning though the decision making has to stay mine.
The ESA method acts as the base of every plan but it has many possible patterns ( boomerang, straight arrow, patchwork ) and the activities chosen for each phases shall make sense all together. The difficulty may be timing because although the teacher exerts some control over the pace of the lesson, one cannot predict how receptive the learners will be. This is particularly difficult for inexperienced teachers how don't know their students that well yet.
