Unit 14 discusses the use of coursebooks versus created material and also the use of authentic material. I really liked this unit because it stressed the importance of being flexible with the materials and it encouraged teachers to be creative in how they use the material. Right now I am working with an elementary level student and I am also using a coursebook. Although the coursebook is very good, and I like it, I found that it did not address the specific needs of the student and found myself looking through countless internet pages to find supplemental material. This unit explained that oftentimes a teacher may find that they simply will need to creat their own materials. So this gave me permission to go ahead and do that which actually saved me a lot of frustration.
