This chapter provided a detailed analysis of what reading and listening skills can entail. While both are equally important, it is easier for learners to experience difficulty with listening because the language isnâ€™t â€˜capturedâ€™ and they have to deduce meaning very quickly after only listening to it once. I also learnt that when teaching these receptive skills, generating interest regarding the topic discussed is very important. Selection of texts is also very important, as authentic texts and/or non-authentic texts can both help develop a studentâ€™s receptive skills when adequately used. Similarly, teachers also need to ensure that they discuss a variety of topics in class to cater to the interests and language levels of all their students.
