This unit covered some of the basic aspects of grammar in the English language including types of nouns, adjectives (which act as modifiers of nouns), definite & indefinite articles, gerunds which are the -ing verb form used as a noun (i.e. Playing hockey is dangerous.), and adverbs (which modify verbs or other adverbs). Each word in a sentence structure has a purpose and it is important to understand how and why a word is used as it is. Being able to explain the parts of speech and its uses will help both the learner and the teacher. Many parts of speech follow specific rules, but there are always exceptions that simply require memorization, such as irregular verb forms because the past simple and past participle tenses do not end in -ed.
