As an ALT working in Japan, I?ve been repeatedly informed that classroom management is not a duty I should perform, but the responsibility of the homeroom teacher or the Japanese teacher of English. However, there are small instances where I am responsible for managing the class, especially if I?m in charge of an activity or lesson. And yet, because I?m not fully in control, it?s sometimes difficult to do as suggested in this chapter and ensure that the classroom atmosphere is setup the right way to ensure everyone is on the same page and cooperating. Still, even though I can?t arrange the seating in a way I think will work best for the classroom, I am very mindful of how I give instructions and present new materials to the students. It was very difficult at first, but eventually I found what phrasing worked best with a certain class and realized that asking ?Do you understand?? was not an effective way to check the student?s comprehension of the task.
