Vocabulary, grammar and functions are important in the classroom environment because they are another key part to the success of the students. When making a lesson plan the straight arrow approach is used for grammar and vocab, whereas boomerang and patchwork are used for function lesson plans. This is not always true and lesson plans can be changed. When teaching vocabulary students need to know spelling, pronunciation, the meaning, its use, word grammar and how it interacts with other words. When teaching grammar students need to know the meaning, the use of the word, patterns and forms of the word, and the spoken and written form. For functions the focus is on agreeing, refusing, suggesting, inviting and disagreeing and how they are conducted in English (for example: inviting someone to a birthday party). The idea is to stimulate students with different activities that get them involved in the vocabulary, grammar or functions of the lesson plan. The idea is to also teach students vocabulary, grammar and functions that are relevant and teachable to the students (Are the students going to use the information again? How often? Will they understand or are they at the level to be taught this information?).
