Instead of starting the first lesson with a course book material, it's much better to focus on establishing rapport among students and between students and the teacher. The teacher should also get to know students' needs and find out which language aspects are found difficult. There are several ways of achieving that - surveys, communication games (like \"tell us about\" communication game), needs survey. It's useful and stimulating when the teacher starts the lesson with \"a warmer\", which is a short but engaging activity that works as a kind of \"warm up\" for students and encourages them to use English. A warmer may be a vocabulary or a memory game, tongue twister or a pictionary. Work in pairs is a useful technique for classes with students at different language levels. Pair or group work, as well as worksheets and choral repetition may be found effective tools for teaching large groups.
