This unit introduces kinds of tests and reasons for testing. Tests might be given to group students with similar abilities into the same class, to determine what students need to work on, or to determine what progress students have made. This last reason, which is what progress tests are for, are probably what students might usually think of when they think of a test, and is most likely to factor into a grade you give them. External tests of English proficiency are another big category of test. Students usually take these to access work and study opportunities. Evaluations, however, need not only be given as formal written test. Class activities, class discussions of how the course has been going, and student feedback forms can also be useful ways for teachers and students to better understand how students are progressing towards their educational goals.
