Course-books are an integral part of teaching any foreign language. There are useful for teachers and students alike. Oftentimes, the excessive use of course books becomes a controversial issue. Hence, it is preferable for teachers to use supplementary materials to make the lesson sound more thorough and beneficial. Course materials are divided into twofold, either authentic or created materials. Authentic materials mean the use of concrete tools including auditory, visual, written and spoken materials. Accordingly, songs, videos, poems, newspapers are regarded as authentic materials. Authentic materials are of paramount importance for it increases the motivation, eagerness and interest of learners during the lesson. On the other hand, created materials are aimed to support and/or replace the unwanted activities designed on a course book. Created materials include crosswords, word search puzzles, and role-play cards, to name but a few. Using course books contains pros and cons. The advantages as well as disadvantages of implementing the course books are multiple. Using course books make lesson effective, smooth, multi-diversified, and relevant to learners? level. By contrast, the course books lessen the creativity and flexibility of teachers throughout the course. Thus, lessons become less flexible and more limited. In effect, it is essential for teachers to use course books in a balanced and effective manner for positive outcomes.
