In the videos, we see two lessons, and one is more effective than the other. The second lesson gets much better results. The teacherâ€™s approach is different. He does not focus on TEFL jargon like â€˜modal auxiliary verbsâ€™ and rather focuses on examples which the students can quickly grasp. The students learn the structure. He does not keep repeating that this is easy, which could be making the students in the first video feel intimidated and afraid to lose face if they demonstrate that they do not understand an â€˜easyâ€™ concept in front of their peers and teacher. (This is even more applicable since the students are adult learners.) The teacher uses a variety of gestures to prompt students, and uses their names. He uses a funny confused face to prompt self correction when possible, which helps keep the students comfortable â€“ he looks more ridiculous than their wrong answer, shielding them. He also knows and reviews the students names. He consistently builds positive rapport with the students.
