Unit fourteen discusses the use of course books and lesson materials. The unit goes over a series of points both positive and negative with having to use a course book. However, the unit also explains there are many ways in which a teacher can use the course book, such as omitting, replacing, and adapting certain sections that may not be the most beneficial way for students to learn. The unit also covers the different aspects of using authentic material and created material. Authentic material uses language in the real world, meaning it's using language that cannot be graded or designed specifically for students, therefore teachers need to be aware of which authentic materials are appropriate for using in the classroom. Authentic materials include magazines, shows, movies, music, interviews, books, and more. Then there is created materials which are typically designed by the teacher, sometimes in order to replace parts in a textbook. Unlike authentic material, created can be graded and designed for the students.
