This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit dealt with teaching pronunciation and phonology, or the study of the properties of sounds. When teaching pronunciation, students must learn the intonation and stress of English words and sentences. Intonation refers to the pattern of sounds within a sentence, whereas stress refers to syllables, rather than whole words or individual sounds. The way a sentence is intoned gives the listener clues as to meaning and whether or not an answer is desired. Stressing certain syllables in words also determines meaning in a sentence. When teaching actual pronunciation, it's helpful to guide students with drilling, slowed-down examples of correct sound formation, as well as using diagrams of the head to show where sounds should be produced in the mouth and throat. The International Phonetic Alphabet can also be used, but is more suited to advanced students.
I found the section on the phonemic alphabet very interesting and the transcription exercises were also very interesting and fun to complete.
