As with the last unit, this unit does an excellent job of breaking down the skills of writing and speaking. With writing, I very easily forget about spelling, punctuation, and even pronounciation. Since I assumed pronounciation was only concentrated on in speaking, I was surprised to find it in the writing section, but also understand why it's there. If students can't read what they're writing, they are less likely to understand what it is they're writing. I wouldn't want to write Japanese if I couldn't read what I was writing, either. However, I was surprised that penmanship wasn't so much of a focus. In Japanese schools, all students must memorize specific stroke order of alphabet letters, and thus, most students' handwriting looks the same. While it is true that everyone has their own style, because everyone learned the same method of writing alphabet characters, and copied the examples from their textbooks several times, everyone has very similar handwriting styles here.
