Course books and materials are both important to ensure that the students remain engaged and motivated. Even though course books provide a syllabus which is graded to a level suitable for the students and offer certain continuity and progression, they are usually designed to be used by general audience and students might find their exclusive use boring and predictable. Therefore, teacher can omit certain lessons if they are not relevant or instead of omitting may replace it with more appropriate, similar content. In some cases teacher can choose to add extra material to the course book or use same base materials but in his or her own way. Authentic materials are more real and often more interesting and motivating, however, they cannot be graded to the level of students while materials created by teacher such as crosswords, role-play cards, word search puzzles can be.
