It is a sort of relief noticing, maybe for the first time in all of my student of English language career, that once you get hold of Present Tenses it might be easier to get to the Past Tenses. Using them is not much of a problem - even the dreadful Past Perfect Continuous - but explaining them is much more complicated. Also because, even though knowing the tenses is a basic learning skill that one should acquire, the truth is that all L2 wish they will one day get to the point of just speaking their second language without having to think about it. So 'eagerness' to learn tenses might be a tough quite an obstacle.
