This unit taught me that while there is no one way to approach a lesson, there are certain strategies and tools that can be used to promote the active engagement of students in the classroom. The â€œEngage, Study, and Activateâ€ (ESA) method is significant because it uses elicitation strategies to gauge studentsâ€™ existing knowledge while simultaneously allowing the teacher to plan a lesson according to the needs of the students. Engaging the students and drawing their attention and interest to the lesson helps them focus on studying the task at hand, while the â€œactivateâ€ stage puts their new knowledge into practice and application in a fun and engaging way. In short, this unit showed me that an effective teacher encourages students to work through problems by themselves to learn the material while also maintaining their role as a guide.
