I've learned how to identify which present tense is being used, what are some identifying markers and what they each mean. Essentially this unit has taught me how to break down each sentence and look at what the point its trying to convey is. This is useful because, as native speakers, we don't think about how our sentences are constructed or why. When teaching non-native English speakers it is vital to understand this so we can teach them how to construct sentences that make sense. To see the difference between a lesson that engages the class and a lesson that does not was very helpful. It is abundantly clear that the teacher does not engage students in the first lesson. In the second lesson, he starts off by asking their names -- and making sure they have name cards, which is a great tip -- and engaging them immediately. He has their attention from the second he says, \"Good Evening!\" He looks like he wants to be there, so the students want to be there, too.
