This unit reviews different types of lesson materials and the pros and cons of using a course book in class. Some materials or activities can come from a course book, but there are also authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are those which native language users could/would use: magazines, radio shows, television shows, etc. These are beneficial as language learners can be more interested in these materials and five them more confidence. Created materials are those which a teacher can come up with themselves. These are beneficial as a teacher can cater them to each class they teach. Course books are helpful as they are well laid out and have graded tests. However, they are not customized for each class. There are also good and not-so-good course books; therefore, there are certain things to keep in mind when selecting one.
