Unit 2 first discusses the different theories and methods of teaching a foreign language, including the merits and drawbacks of each. It then expands on a preferable method called ESA which stands for Engage Study Activate. In particular it lists a number of games for the Engage phase, and different ways for the elicitation which is the first part of the Study phase. It gives ideas and a plan for each phase and advice of what to correct a student, how and when. I find this unit very useful, informative and thought-provoking.This unit focused on the different ways to teach the structure of language with regard to grammar, vocabulary, and function. There was a heavy focus on the Engage/Study/Activate (ESA) model for various levels of learners and in what way it is appropriate for the respective level. i.e. teaching vocabulary typically uses a ?straight arrow? approach for lower-level learners, while higher-level learners learning complex structures of grammar may use a ?Patchwork? approach due to function and complexity of the sentence.
