I learnt that there are numerous ways to evaluate student's English abilities, namely through the use of tutorials, evaluations by the students and through tests. These tests can be furthered broken down into placement tests (helps place students at the start of a course), progress tests (to measure progress), diagnostic tests (to ascertain what the students know/don't know) and practice tests (to help prepare for external examinations).
There are a number of external examinations, which have the purpose of quantitatively measuring the level of English skills a student possesses. These examinations are conducted by a number of external examination centers, such as through the university of Cambridge, and may also focus on different aspects of the English language, such as English used in business environments, etc.
