This unit covers the various methodologies of teaching language in terms of explaining how each one works along with its pros and cons. While each methodology is important to understand as a teacher evaluating which methods to employ and understanding the student psyche of language adaptation, the unit's primary focus in explaining a multitude of methodologies is to showcase the ESA method that this TESOL course utilizes. The outstanding feature of the ESA method is its ability to harness a variety of methodologies and exercises to suit its execution, such as using drills from the audio/lingualism method in the study phase or adapting the hands-on nature of the task-based learning method in the activities of the engage stage. The extra benefit of the ESA method is its design; by allowing teachers to construct various types of lessons through the straight arrow, boomerang, and patchwork approaches, they receive more creative freedom in lesson planning and execution. With this loose structure, teachers can become more comfortable with improvising in order to suit the immediate needs of the students who also benefit greatly by receiving a more student-oriented lesson as compared to other methodogies such as the PPP or grammar/translation methods. This unit is, perhaps, one of the most important lessons in the entire course because it provides future teachers with the basis off of which they are free to construct their classrooms and inspires them with activities to captivate their students.
