The four past verb tenses are similar in structure and usage to the four present tense verb tenses but relate to past time periods rather than present time periods. The past simple, used for actions that were completed at a definite time in the past, will typically add '-ed' or '-d' to the end of the base verb, although there are many irregular forms to learn. The past continuous tense, used for ongoing past actions, will use the past tense of the verb 'to be', followed by the 'ing' form of the verb. The past perfect is used for an action that was completed before another past action, and is formed by using the past tense of the verb 'to have', followed by the past participle verb form. And the past perfect continuous is used for longer actions that had been going on up until the past moment we are talking about. This tense will use the past tense of the verb 'to have', followed by 'been', followed by the 'ing' form of the verb.
