This unit covers conditionals and reported speech. Conditions are 'if' or 'when' and can refer to the past present or future. There are different types of conditionals based on this. The zero conditional refers to a definite or true situation in the present 'when you set fire to something, it burns'. You will notice there are two clauses, one of which needs to be satisfied before the other is true. The first conditional is a real situation that will likely occur in the future, e.g. if you set fire to that, it will burn'. The second conditional represents a future event that is unlikely to happen or be true 'If I could jump really high I would win the pole vault at the olympics' The third conditional refers to a hypothetical past event and it's past consequence 'if i had trained harder would have been able to jump higher'. A mixed condition refers to a hypothetical past event and it's present consequence 'If I had trained harder I could jump higher now' The second part of the module covers reported speech. This can be reported in the present or the past. If reported in the present the exact words are used, but the 'I am' is replaced by 'he is' (or similar). If the speech is reported in the past then the form of the verb also needs to change. I'm feeling great become He said that he was feeling great.
