Unit 7 explains introduction of new vocabulary, grammar structures and language functions. ESA straight arrow methods are used in lessons that introduce grammar or vocabulary. For example, in a lesson on clothing the Engage would have a discussion of new clothes the students received for Christmas; Study would possibly have Gap-fill exercises and drill on words students mispronounced during Engage; Then, Activate would possibly be a packing the suitcase for a trip game. Teaching language functions may work better with the ESA boomerang or patchwork method where there is more emphasis on use of vocabulary in possibly role playing and pair interaction. I understand talking to student about difference in spoken and written form, but I have a hard time in accepting \"gonna\" in either form. Of course, the dictionary says it is never to be in written form unless quoting someone.
