My biggest challenge when teaching past tense is not how to teach the material but, how to help struggling students stay on track and build upon the grammar they know. My role as an ALT is very limited when it comes to introducing new grammar And like any subject in any part of the world, Japanese Teachers of English (JTEs) have a curriculum to work with, and in most cases not enough time to ensure that every student understands the grammar before moving on. As it's not my responsibility to teach the grammar but reinforce it, it's especially challenging to introduce writing and oral activities to students that don't fully comprehend the grammar they have learned or are learning. However, I do agree that using card games is s fun way for students to engage in old and new grammar.
