Most often, teachers are more comfortable to teach speaking than writing since the latter involves many quiet moments in the classroom. However, with the help of the ESA strategy, teaching writing can be interesting and fun. Personally, I have learned from this unit the different games can be utilized during my writing classes. Authentic and created coursework are great materials to use in the classroom because you can manipulate the course work to better suit the student's ability and interests. Course books are more strict but the book provides a syllabus for the teacher. What I was most interested in in this unit was the disadvantages of using a course book and how Important it is to use different materials in the...  [Read more]

The main thing to consider when deciding which tense to use should be whether or not the sentence is based on real fact or prediction. A good example of this is the statement \"I will go to school tomorrow\". This is a statement of absolute fact, but an ESL learner may use it in the context of a different variation of future tense. The teacher may say \"what do you want to do in the...  [Read more]

The teacher must bear in mind that these are details that make the class environment and the lessons more likely to be meaningful. The teacher should not take for granted the lack of experience of the learners. To be the teacher does not mean we know everything, it means we hold some knowledge and guidance skills, we are educators above all. The first was cringe worthy and the second was a pretty good lesson. Although the first video was a bit over the top it did remind me vaguely of some classes I had in school and university. Trying to point out as precisely as possible what went wrong in that class was useful. The second class provided a good example of how a class could go. Surely it was neither 'perfect' nor 'the only way a class can go', but it did provide an example. I felt I...  [Read more]

I learned that I can use scaffolding techniques, like pre-teaching problematic vocabulary, to allow the students to read the materials. It's easy as a teacher to want students to just \"do it,\" but a knowledge of how we go about producing sounds in English can only help. The section on modal auxiliary verbs, those specific verbs that add meaning to the main verb, was interesting and easier to grasp as a native English speaker. I enjoyed learning the breakdown between uses in the present/future tense and the past tense. Such as “I need to go to work. I needed to go to work.” The passive voice had a very good explanation and chart. I feel students will be able to grasp the...  [Read more]
