Pronunciation And Phonology/oh Sound - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL-TESOL Courses

Here we have a set of five words, which all share one sound: the ?oh? sound, as in ?go?, ?show?, ?dough?, ?note? and ?boat?. They?re five different spelling patterns to tell our students so they can identify when to make the ?oh? sound. We can have a simple letter ?o?, ?ow?, ?ough?, ?o? with the magic ?e? which turns our vowel into what we knew as long sounds and the ?oa? as in ?boat?. Now, for a non-native learner, perhaps they can handle something like this. They remember that these spelling combinations help to produce the ?oh? sound and they can go about their business looking at the words and memorizing this knowing that these spelling patterns will produce the sound ?oh?. Now that?s okay until we get to a situation where we can also have words like ?to?, ?cow? and also...  [Read more]

Activities that you have planned may take longer than you expected or students may need more time to grasp a particular subject, so don't be too stuck on your structured lessons, anticipate the need for changes. When planning a lesson remember that it is important to be organized; having a plan will help give you a realistic expectation of the class and keep things on schedule. Also remember to include both...  [Read more]

The advice on many websites given in Unit 17 is to learn phrasal verbs as vocabulary and not by analysis and it seems like solid advice...as that is how they are learned by native learners. I remember blanking out on transitive and intransitive in middle school grammar classes and have to say, I still have the same tendency. The terminology seems so unnecessary and confusing! It provides several examples, common student errors, and sample teaching activities for each, allowing me to truly learn them. He didn't bother to learn their names or anything. The \"sample activate stage teaching ideas\" are especially inspiring, since although it's easy to simply \"give out\" the form and usage to the students, it requires carful thoughts and preparation to help the students practice the grammar effectively. English Grammar Present Perfect Continuous Teaching Ideas 2 Tefl Certification - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL-TESOL Courses

http://www.teflonline.net The teaching idea covered here is one that would be particularly appropriate for more advanced English language learners, those who can use different tenses accurately. The activity is a board game that focuses on comparing and contrasting the tenses, focusing on the Present Perfect and the Present Perfect Continuous. Each student takes a turn at rolling the dice and moving around the board. For example a student could land on a square that says "Something you have been learning for a long time." An appropriate answer for the student could be "I have been learning English for a long time." The next student takes a turn and could land on a square that says "A beautiful place you have visited." This time the student could use the Present Perfect rather...  [Read more]

In some way, or for some students, can't it be said to be potentially cruel or diminishing--a redundant proving of that which is already known: that you don't know how to say or do a particular thing? In this light, how can teachers engage students to wade into new learning objectives...  [Read more]

tesol articles TESOL Articles - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ Difficulties with Spoken English

Difficulties with Spoken English Recently, I greeted a German intern working with our company in the lobby of our office building while walking into work. “Good morning,” I said, and he returned. I did not know much about him yet as he had just started. I knew he was from Germany as we had recently been introduced, but I decided to find out more about him. “Where are you coming from,” I asked. He was confused and embarrassed. This is a common question others in the office have often asked meaning Where do you live, or How do you get to work everyday etc. especially since the locale of the office is downtown DC, so not everyone comes from the same place. I realized, however, as soon as it came out of my mouth and by the strained look on his face, that I should have constructed the...  [Read more]

Teaching here since 2000, I have seen many of these problems in the classroom, not to mention in my everyday interactions in english outside the classroom here in Japan. tesol articles TESOL Articles - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ Common Linguistic Problems

Common Linguistic problems Contronyms, Heteronyms, Idioms, Oh my! English is an extremely complex language. Before a student can be considered truly proficient, he/she must not only master a variety of tenses and irregular verbs, sentence structure and parts of speech, but he/she must also work to understand and master lexical and structural ambiguities. Lexical ambiguities are very common and have a variety of names and definitions depending on the level of ambiguity. Homonyms are words that have the same spelling, but two or more meanings. An example of this is: mean. Is it describing an unkind person? Is it an average? Is someone talking about the definition of a word? Another type of lexical ambiguity is the heteronym. These are words that are spelled the same, but have different...  [Read more]

tesol articles TESOL Articles - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ Teaching Grammar

Teaching Grammar The acquisition of new grammar presents interesting challenges for both the student and the teacher. There are factors that need to be considered from the student's point of view, as well as the teacher's point of view. Grammar should be taught and learned a natural form. Teacher should avoid using technical terms related to grammar. The aforementioned factors can cause other difficulties that will be discussed in this article. Learning grammar in a natural form depends mostly on the way on which the teacher presents the grammar. The teacher must present the grammar using natural situations and examples that the students can relate to. In order to achieve this it is necessary, that the teacher plan ahead, know his students well, have a firm grasp of the grammar topic and...  [Read more]

tesol articles TESOL Articles - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ Online vs In-class Courses

Online vs. Onsite Courses Becoming certified to teach English as a second language can be done onsite or online. On online course was the most efficient, economical and in many ways the superior way for me. This article explains my background and situation. It also touches on the process I went through to get to this, the final lesson. Online is not for everyone. It takes an open and creative mind to step into the world of computers and electronic tutors. An imagination and discipline were keys to my approach. Imagination was profound when I would take time away from class and Google some blogs about teaching English. Dave’s Café was just one of these places where you could find endless discussions on the joys and perils of teaching English in other countries. These stories were the...  [Read more]
