1 They are real and therefore more interesting and motivating
2 Students gain confidence when they understand them
3 They can be geared to the interests of a particular group of students

Gap fill activities
Pictures stories plays vital role in terms of teaching materials
I also learn to not rely on cause book to be the only solution to everything but to try new ideas and vary ones activities

This unit and its advice about advantages and disadvantages of the course book use have confirmed what I've been doing with my students - on one hand there's a ready and mostly easy to use material, grammar and listening, everything adapted to the students' level, yet often they find some exercises or listening/discussion topics boring, which I have to substitute with other authentic materials that are more appreciated...
