In this unit, I have learned several points that are important with regard to the teaching of pronunciation. Teaching pronunciation is important because students are concerned about learning to pronounce things properly, and because it affects the meaning behind what is communicated in classroom activities. Teachers often neglect it because they lack the confidence and training to undertake teaching this topic. Likewise, native speakers sometimes have difficulty hearing certain features of pronunciation, such as the rise and fall of intonation. Techniques for teaching intonation include: nonsense words (sounds uttered without meaning for the purpose of conveying a particular attitude); gesture (that is, sweeping the hand up or down in order to indicate a rising or falling tone); humming or singing sentences out loud in order to demonstrate stress and intonation; and using the board to make marks showing emphasis and intonation. In this lesson, I have also reviewed the ways in which English sounds are joined and linked. For example, sound dropping often occurs between words (as when ?Did you eat yet? becomes ?Jeet yet?? and ?Did you?? Becomes ?Dju??) Sound changing also occurs (as when ?The United States? becomes ?The Unided States,? and ?Another one? becomes ?Anerdun?). In the process of learning pronunciation, students may be benefited by learning the phonemic alphabet, because doing so will give students the ability to pronounce any word imaginable.
