The receptive skills, reading and listening, are 2 out of 4 basic skills necessary to access and understand our own and new languages. Reading and listening have different motives such as purpose or entertainment but combined with our own minds and therefore use of pre-existing knowledge, can be both also. Specialist skills are needed when reading or listening and there can be various problems along the way. Reading is less problematic than listening simply because you can go over it a number of times when written in front of you. How to approach these problems as a teacher can be challenging yet ideas such as teaching vocabulary and structures pre-reading/listening, correlating topics to tasks and creating/maintaining interest are greatly beneficial. The patchwork ESA example also seemed a good choice here.
