Course books are a set of materials used for teaching purposes such as students book, workbook, Cassettes or CDs, teacher’s book, videos etc. However, there are advantages and disadvantages in using course books and as teachers, we need to make the best use of the course book we have. There are four different options for course book use. We could omit, replace, supplement or adapt the materials for optimal purposes. We omit certain lessons from the course book if they are not beneficial or relevant to our students. We replace materials with similar but more appropriate materials for our student’s learning. We supplement materials to reinforce a language point or to extend the student’s engagement with the language, and we may adapt the same basic material with our own teaching style.
