Unit 18 covers modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. The modals are; can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't, and ought to. Modals can be used to express a number of ideas, such as; obligation, possibility and probability, permission and prohibition, ability, and advice. There are two voices used in English; passive and active. In the passive, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. Both sentences have the same meaning, but in the active voice the focus is on the doer, while in the passive voice the focus is away from the doer. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles, which are either prepositions or adverbs.
