This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Past tenses describe events that took place in the past. Past simple sentences are used to describe an action that took place at a definite point in the past and was completed, i.e I ran yesterday. Past continuous form is used to describe interrupted past actions, gradual development of a situation over time that started in the past and continued into the present. The past perfect form is used to describe an event that proceeds another, ie. when I arrived home I realized I had lost my wallet. Past Perfect Continuous form is used to describe longer actions and situations in the past that had been going on up to the moment we are thinking about it, ie. before going home I had been sleeping for two hours.
