In this unit I have learned various ways to manage a classroom of students. Teachers should make use of their voice, eye contact, and commonly understood gestures to hold their students' attention and establish a good rapport with them. The classroom seating arrangement can be altered to affect the atmosphere of the classroom and maximize student talk time, but factors such as the age of the students and the available physical space within the classroom should be taken into account. Activities can be geared towards students working alone, students in pairs, students in larger groups, and the class as a whole; each grouping has advantages and disadvantages. It is important to find a balance between maintaining control over the class and creating a relaxed atmosphere in which to learn. If it becomes necessary to discipline a student, teachers should remain calm and adhere to the learning center's disciplinary guidelines.
