In learning a new language, grammar is essential; however, without a working vocabulary, it is impossible to utilize the tools one?s been given. A teacher will assist in building students? vocabulary, and a teacher selects which words to focus upon based on a variety of factors. A teacher will consider what words are appropriate for the students, based on the students? ages, cultures, learning abilities, and needs or desires to know certain words, as well as the objective of the lesson. This unit reminded me that presenting a new word is not simply a matter of telling students a word and its definition. For example, if I am teaching a lesson on weather and seasons, I may introduce the word ?precipitate.? Aside from its meaning, students need to know when and how to use this word, which may be tricky given that this word can be utilized in verb form as ?to precipitate,? or changed into a noun as ?precipitation.? Students may benefit from creating a visual display, like a poster board depicting various types of precipitation, in order to understand the word?s meaning and context. The ESA method remains applicable for vocabulary lessons. Vocabulary and tense practice can be combined. Continuing the weather/seasons example, students could discuss the weather in simple present tense or discuss how the weather ?had been? during this past winter, summer, etc.
