This unit stresses the importance of creating a positive rapport with students and managing the classroom. Building rapport with students is essential to creating a positive learning environment. Some of the ways to build rapport with students is to: demonstrate a positive attitude toward teaching and the subject matter, show personal interest in your students, chose materials and activities involving more student talk time, and make sure students know each other's name and a little bit about each other. Classroom management includes seating arrangements and maintaining discipline. There are several types of seating arrangements that can be used depending on the types of activities being used, such as: orderly rows for whole class activities, separate tables for group work, as well as, circles and horseshoes for pair work. The teacher?s role in creating rapport and managing the classroom is evident by the teacher?s position during different activities. For example, when giving instructions, it is important to have the attention of the whole class, therefore the teacher should be standing in front of the class making eye contact with the students. However, if students are working on a group activity, the teacher should remain outside of the activity and only monitor. When students are reading, the teacher should be seated, creating a relaxed atmosphere for students to work.
