This unit covers evaluation and testing. It discusses ways to determine English level or proficiency of language learners through placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, tutorials, and external examinations. A placement test is given before a course to determine what grade or level would best suit a student. Diagnostic tests are usually given at the beginning of a course to determine what knowledge a student already has and what he or she needs to work on. Progress tests can be formal or informal, verbal or written, quizzes or longer tests, in intervals determined by the teacher and designed to evaluate student progress during the course of the course; it also encourages them to review previous material and study to be evaluated on the new lessons. Tutorials are lessons or part of lessons that may involve individual students or groups and allows a teacher to get a more accurate idea of student needs and progress. Finally, there are a number of external examinations with a number of purposes that test ELL proficiency, such as the TOEFL and IELTS tests that determine whether a non-native English speaker has a high enough proficiency to attend college classes in English. A teacher could also have students evaluate the class (such as through a questionnaire or class discussion) so as to determine how effective the class is/was, what helped them as students and in what aspects the class could be improved.
