Choosing course material is as the unit described a time consuming process. I do not possess experience with selecting course material with the purpose of teaching; however, I do have plenty of experience with selecting material to use for my own private studies. Textbooks can vary significantly in regards to the language that they cover; however, I have noticed that is a general pattern that the content tends to follow, at least in so far as Chinese language textbooks are concerned. Introductory books tend to start off with greetings, then family, then food of some kind, and so on. I would imagine that English language material would tend to follow the same pattern. The approach that I take when working with textbooks is that I buy a large selection pertaining to the relevant topic and then I keep those books on hand in case I need them. Where one textbook may be lacking, another may have what the former was missing.
