Knowing the correct tenses is extremely important when it comes to grammar and sentence structure . If a person uses the incorrect tense while explaining a situation,it can and will result in a complete misunderstanding between two people. Similarly, when giving instructions that are time sensitive and need to be completed at an advance date,using incorrect tenses will result in the task being completed at the wrong time or on the wrong date.I learned that past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous all follow the pattern of those corresponding forms in the present tense. Of note however, is that the past perfect continuous utilizes two auxiliary verbs 'had' and been'. This can confuse learners of English. For me, I am comfortable that specifically teaching affirmative, negative, and question formats... will be enough to keep the students learning well.
