This unit centers around teaching receptive skills, which include reading and listening, to English learners. People read and listen to language for purpose and for entertainment. How one uses receptive skills depend on the reasons/motives for reading and listening. Furthermore, depending on the reasons/motives for reading and listening and/or the task given, one must use specific skills to obtain information. These specific skills include predicting, skimming, scanning, reading for details, and deducting meaning from context, which I find are learning objectives in reading classes for students. This unit presents helpful tips in helping students reduce obstacles in reading and listening, such as pre-teaching difficult vocabulary and selecting authentic text to boost student confidence in reading and listening. One important point related to the selection of texts and dialogues for reading and listening is that the topics should appeal to the students. Finally, the unit present a sample ESA lesson for teaching receptive skills, which I find helpful. Sample lessons always give me guidelines and examples for what I should include in my lesson and provide inspiration for creating and modifying my own lessons.
